I was involved in a discussion about health plan components last week (yes, only for insurance nerds…) and I heard the best explanation of how a health plan should work EVER.
Plan Sponsors are the Master. All service providers are Servants to the Master. I believe in common law, if Servants withhold or otherwise restrict the will or property of the Master, it is theft.
This applies to Plan Sponsors for any type of funding arrangement (fully insured, self-insured, level-funded) btw….
One of the most common thefts in health plans is Rx costs.
There are three common ways that dollars are… highjacked… out of a medical plan.
